Title: SPECIAL TOPICS IN CREATIVE WRITING: YOUNG ADULT LIT
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2019
Credits: 3
Description:
This class will be taught by Professor Rachel Carter.
The success of books like The Fault in Our Stars, Twilight, and The Hunger Games have brought young adult literature into the spotlight in recent years, creating a boom in publishing and changing the way we view coming-of-age stories. This course will introduce students to the elements and techniques that go into crafting a successful young adult narrative. We’ll study work from a wide range of YA authors, including Angi Thomas, John Green, Emily M. Danforth, Leigh Bardugo, and more. Students will write creatively both in and out of the classroom, producing a portfolio of work that will include two original YA short stories or chapters of a larger narrative and one substantial revision. Students will share their work in a workshop setting, offering peer critiques with an eye toward revision. The class will also explore larger elements of crafting a fiction story, including narrative structure, character development, worldbuilding, and scene work.
