The English language is fascinating! English has changed a lot since the time of Beowulf and is now the native language of peoples all over the world. We will study how English has changed and the varieties of English spoken and written today. We'll pay special attention to the English of Shakespeare; Chaucer; the King James Bible; the varieties of American English; English dialects, both British and American (e.g. Gullah, or Geechee); and English around the world today: the West Indies (Jamaican Creole, Dub poetry); Austrialian English; and the weird and wonderful New Jersey English.
