Title: GRADUATE WRITING SEMINAR: THE PERSONAL ESSAY

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2019

Credits: 3

Description:
The class will be taught by Professor Clifford Chase.
In this hands-on writing workshop, students will explore the many possibilities in personal essay, both through their own writing and in readings that touch on a variety of nonfiction subgenres, such as biography, writing about place, and inventive forms of criticism and autobiography. Readings include pieces by Jorge Luis Borges, Joe Brainard, Dawn Lundy Martin, Nafissa Thompson-Spires, and Héctor Tobar. Writing assignments and weekly discussion of students’ work will take participants through the creative process from brief (ungraded) experiments to first draft (12 to 18 pages) to final revision. Other requirements include an in-class presentation by each class member on one of the assigned readings.
