Description:
This course is concerned with the aesthetic and ideological parameters of documentary cinema of the new millennium. We will engage with various approaches to documentary film practice, including expository, observational, interactive, reflexive, performative and essayistic modes. The course will employ a comparative framework to analyze the portrayal of four common topics of documentary cinema: politics, community, family and crime. We will study three different documentary approaches to each of these four subject areas. The course will engage with the work of acclaimed documentary filmmakers such as Agnes Varda, Frederick Wiseman, Alex Gibney, Michael Apted and Laura Poitras.
