Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2020
Credits: 3
Description:
Major Film Directors Spring 2019
This semester, Major Film Directors will examine the post-WWII work of Fritz Lang and Billy Wilder. Both directors, born in Austria, emigrated to the United States shortly after Hitler’s ascension to power in Germany. Lang arrived in 1934 with an established reputation as a major figure in German cinema. Wilder arrived in 1933 with few European credits but earned early success in Hollywood as a screenwriter. Although both men made important contributions to American film before the war, this course will focus on the films released between 1945 and 1960 when each treated the American scene with pessimism and sardonic humor at odds with the nation’s post-war optimism and prosperity. Both directors made a major contribution to film noir during this period. Films to be screened include The Big Heat, Scarlett Street, Rancho Notorious, Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Ace in the Hole, among many others. A mid-term and final essay will be required.
