Course details
Name: ENGL - 114
Title: UTOPIA DYSTOPIA
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2020
Credits: 3
Description:
In light of current cultural and social issues, political trends, increasing natural disasters and terrorism, this course explores the several waves of dystopian literature (and their outgrowth from the utopian genre). The course examines how surveillance, dehumanization, and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through various oppressive social control mechanisms. Dystopias offer criticism about current trends, societal norms, and political systems, and allow us to envision ways we may resist. The course is also designed to help students write about literature in engaging and convincing ways. Possible titles we may read are: Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World, 1984, The Hunger Games, Divergent, Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future, Feed, Dry, The Handmaid's Tale, Proxy, and Landscape with Invisible Hand. Dystopian films may also be shown. This course satisfies the C2 Literature Gen Ed requirement.
