Description:
This course focuses on American versions of realism and naturalism. We will investigate the complex cultural and ideological work performed by these movements in their historical context, with particular attention given to the representation of class, gender, nativism, and race. We will also examine how these writers engaged or resisted the concept of American Exceptionalism. Authors to be studied may include Bierce, Cather, Chesnutt, Chopin, Crane, Dreiser, Gilman, Hopkins, Howells, James, London, Norris, Twain, and Wharton.
