Name: ENFL - 251
Title: SPECIAL TOPIC: LATIN AMERICAN CINEMAS
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2020
Credits: 3
Description:
This course will introduce students to Latin America’s rich cinematic histories and traditions. It will offer a survey of the major national cinemas that comprise and complicate the term “Latin American Cinema” itself. The works screened in this course will offer students a better understanding of documentary, classical, comedy, musical, political, independent, art cinema, and avant-garde films. Students will consider how these cinemas engage with some of the major historical events and cultural processes that shaped the 20th century and our present contemporary moment, including various waves of globalization and regionalization. They will come to understand how these cinemas mediate and respond to history, politics, and, to a no lesser degree, cinema itself.
