Course details
Name: ENGL - 502
Title: SEMINAR IN BRITISH LITERATURE: JAMES JOYCE
Section: 21
Semester: Summer - 2020
Credits: 3
Description:
James Joyce is probably the most important novelist of the 20th century. In this course we will read three of his most well-known and influential works of fiction: the short story collection Dubliners, the autobiographical fiction A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and his masterwork Ulysses. By focusing on a single author, my hope is that we can achieve a quality of knowledge not possible in survey courses.
The aims of this course are (1) to foster in-depth critical understanding of the fiction of one of the 20th century’s greatest authors, with particular attention to a single, difficult, and highly rewarding work, Ulysses; and (2) to understand Joyce through the development of his artistic work over the course of his lifetime and within the social, historical, political, artistic, and biographical contexts in which his work was produced.
