Description:
This course examines several of Shakespeare’s major comedies and history plays as cultural productions reflecting the concerns, anxieties, values, and ideologies of Shakespeare’s England. While attending to the forms and general aims of comedy and the history play as genres, we give careful consideration to social problems such as gender and class construction, conformity and scapegoating, and the contests for political power that are the particular focuses of this drama. Students write two papers of 4-5, and 5-6 pages, respectively, and post brief weekly reading responses. Class discussion is expected and encouraged.
