Description:
This course offers an overview of literary production in the US from slightly before 1890 to the present. Our readings provide an understanding of the pivotal literary innovations and cultural changes during this time. Movements such as naturalism, realism, and modernism may be the subject of focus, as might immigration policies, regionalism, and the increasing shift from agricultural to urban/industrial economics. We will examine a range of literary texts and genres, diverse in content and form, with a multiplicity of voices and perspectives. Consequently, we will interrogate conceptions of what American literature was, is, and may become. Some of the authors we will read may include: Whitman, Dickinson, Jewett, Crane, Gilman, Chopin, Stevens, Eliot, O’Connor, Momaday, Plath, Miller, Anzaldua, and Naylor.
