Course details

Name: ENGL - 117

Title: WORLD LITERATURE: VOICES OF TRADITION AND CHALLENGE

Section: 02

Semester: Fall - 2020

Credits: 3

Description:
Did you know only about 3% of all books published in the United States are in translation? When we read, we tend to read books about ourselves. It's time to branch out into the world!

This course is an imaginative passport to other geographies, other tongues, other cultures. Now more than ever, reading the literature of global voices is an urgent and deeply rewarding project.

Writers might include: Clarice Lispector, Samantha Schweblin, Valeria Luiselli, Carlos Drummond. Feel free to email the professor during the summer for the updated reading list if you'd like a head-start on the reading. (At this moment, the reading list has not been confirmed - but certainly we'll be reading literature from across the Americas translated into English.)
