We will examine the various sub-categories of the genre, such as the backstage, folk, and Vaudeville musical, as well as directions the genre took after the demise of the studio system. We will study how the movie industry defined popular entertainment and the relationship of song and dance to Hollywood story-telling. Attention will also be paid to the influence of musical theater, radio, popular song and the recording industry. Films to be screened may include Whoopie!, Babes in Arms, Top Hat, Stormy Weather, Holiday Inn, West Side Story, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Hairspray, among others.
