Title: SPECIAL TOPICS IN CREATIVE WRITING

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2020

Credits: 3

Description:
This course will examine the elements and techniques that help craft a successful work of science fiction or fantasy. We'll study writings from a broad range of sci-fi/fantasy authors, including Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, Ursula K. Le Guin, Phillip K. Dick, and more. Students will write their own sci-fi/fantasy works, both in and out of the classroom, producing a portfolio of work that will include three original sci-fi/fantasy short stories or chapters of a larger narrative. Students will share their work in a workshop setting, offering peer critiques with an eye toward revision. The class will also explore larger craft elements of writing, such as worldbuilding, scene work, character development, and more. From dystopian to dragons, this course will allow students to push the limits of their creative imagination while still learning the fundamental building-blocks of writing fiction.
