Name: ENGL - 503

Title: GRADUATE WRITING SEMINAR

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2020

Credits: 3

Description:
In this memoir workshop, we will look at the works of a wide range of authors who have turned the lens inward to write soul-searching autobiographical narratives, ranging from the humorous and witty to the deep and raw. We will learn how writers deploy voice and research in their memoirs as they explore immigrant life (Gary Shteyngart and Edwidge Danticat), drug or alcohol abuse (David Carr and Mary Karr), or growing up in various regions of the U.S. (Harry Crews, Sarah M. Broom, and Ta-Nehisi Coates). This is a writing-intensive workshop during which we will take elements from students’ lives—their experiences—and elevate the narratives to universal themes.

This is a writing-intensive class, and you will be assigned four essays of 750 words each, which we will read aloud and discuss in class. The final project for this class will be a portfolio containing the following: a rewrite of each of your three essays; a 250-word essay introducing your portfolio; a 250-word essay on any one of the articles read in class. You will be responsible for giving written commentary on student essays.
