Description:
This elective focuses on the short story, a versatile and exciting genre that is unique to various regions and eras. We’ll look at narrative technique in writers ranging from the classics (Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Kate Chopin, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Hamlin Garland, Sarah Orne Jewett, Willa Cather, Wm. Faulkner, and Ernest Hemingway) as well as more recent authors (Paolo Bacigalupi, Octavia Butler, Ursula LeGuin, Flannery O’Connor, Ray Bradbury, and ZZ Packer, among others). Students will complete several brief essays, a midterm, and a final. This elective course satisfies the C2 Literature Gen Ed requirement.
