Course details
Name: ENGL - 114
Title: INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE: UTOPIAN AND DYSTOPIAN FICTION
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2021
Credits: 3
Description:
With contemporary social upheavals, uncertain political futures, natural disasters, pandemics, terrorism, dystopia seems especially applicable for our era. This course will explore the emergence of dystopian texts (from the utopian genre) as imagined universes in which oppressive societal control, constant surveillance, dehumanization, and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through exaggerated worst-case scenarios, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or political systems and allow us to envision ways we may resist and start anew. Some possible titles we may read are: Brave New World, 1984, Animal Farm, The Hunger Games, Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future, Feed, and Proxy. Films such as Brazil or The Razor's Edge also might be available for examination.
As of this writing, this course will require in-person (on-campus) attendance.
