This course examines several Shakespearean tragedies and romances as they reflect the concerns, anxieties, values, and ideologies of his time. While we attend to the development of tragedy and romance as genres, we focus on social issues such as constructions of gender, race, and class, heroes and scapegoats, and contests for political power. Class discussion is expected and encouraged.
