Title: CLASS RACE ETHNICITY IN FILM
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2021
Credits: 3
Description:
This semester, Class, Race and Ethnicity in Film will focus on a cluster of pictures made in Hollywood after WWII that historians have labeled the social problem film. This period in American cinema, running from the end of WWII to 1960, represented issues such as racism, anti-Semitism, the plight of the returning veteran and business corruption. As such, the social problem film often depicted a nation at odds with post-war victory and optimism. Both A and B pictures were produced for this cycle of films. Furthermore, many social problem films were authored or directed by artists who would be caught in the anti-communist witch-hunt of HUAC. We will therefore situate these films against the backdrop of the Hollywood blacklist and the Cold War politics of the movie industry and nation. Films to be screened include Body and Soul, Force of Evil, Crossfire, Gentleman’s Agreement, Pride of the Marines, among many others.
