This course is designed to introduce you to the many elements and literary techniques involved in narrative nonfiction¾the literature of reality. Narrative nonfiction came into vogue in the 60s and 70s, when writers like Truman Capote, Gay Talese, Tom Wolfe, and Joan Didion began using so-called “fictional techniques” in their nonfiction stories. Today, thanks to the work of many writers whose pieces you’ll read in this course, narrative nonfiction¾also known as creative nonfiction¾can be found in the pages of most magazines and newspapers.

Today, the names seen in magazines—glossy and literary—include Leslie Jamison, John Jeremiah Sullivan, Maggie Nelson, and Ta-Nehisi Coates.

We will read and dissect essays and articles covering the broad spectrum of the genre.

This is a writing-intensive class, and you will be assigned three essays of 750 words each, which we will read aloud and discuss in class. The final project for this class will be a portfolio containing the following: a rewrite of each of your three essays; a 250-word essay introducing your portfolio; a 250-word essay on any one of the articles read in class.
