From the course catalog: A critical overview of traditional, structural, and transformational-generative approaches to the problems of analyzing the grammar of the English language.... Practical applications for teaching English and for understanding grammatical principles as a means of more effective writing and literary analysis, with attention to poetic and rhetorical devices as focal points.
This course analyzes the broader concepts of language, asking such questions as: Why does grammar exist? What makes grammar correct or incorrect? How did American English grammar evolve? Then, it practically attempts to achieve mastery of current usage, focusing on those concepts socially agreed upon as “proper,” “formal” and “stylistic.” How do we, as writers, readers and speakers of English, balance our understanding of prescriptive grammar while allowing for an understanding that language also has a descriptive function.
