Description:
This course is concerned with the aesthetic and ideological parameters of documentary cinema of the new millennium. We will engage with various approaches to documentary film practice, including expository, observational, interactive, reflexive, performative and essayistic modes. The course will employ a comparative framework to analyze the portrayal of three common topics of documentary cinema: politics, community and crime. We will study three different documentary approaches to each of these subject areas. The course will engage with the work of acclaimed documentary filmmakers such as Agnes Varda, Frederick Wiseman, Alex Gibney, Werner Herzog and Laura Poitras.
