Title: INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE: THE SHORT STORY
Section: 04
Semester: Fall - 2021
Credits: 3
Description:
This course focuses on the short story, a versatile form that every region and era makes its own. We’ll look at narrative technique in writers ranging from Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne to Kate Chopin and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, as well as more recent authors such as Lorrie Moore, George Saunders, and ZZ Packer. We’ll examine not just what a story means but how it accomplishes that, a sort of creative writing approach to develop both rhetorical and critical skills. Students will also complete two brief essays, a midterm, and a final exam.
This course meets the women and gender studies (3C) requirement for the English major, as well as the Gen Ed (C2) literature requirement.
