Description:
This course surveys the history of American film from its origins to the end of World War II. We will study the rise of cinema as a mass culture form and the development of the studio system with its reliance on genre production and the star system. We will also consider documentary filmmaking in the 1930s/1940s, examples of studio animation and the experiments of the pre-WWII film avant-garde. Films to be screened include Grand Hotel, Duck Soup, I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang, Frankenstein and others. Weekly readings in film history and essay exams will be required.
