Title: WORLD LITERATURE - VOICES OF TRADITION AND CHALLENGE

Section: 02

Semester: Fall - 2021

Credits: 3

Description:
THIS IS A SYNCHRONOUS, ONLINE COURSE.

Did you know only about 3% of all books published in the United States are in translation? When we read, we tend to read books about ourselves. It's time to branch out into the world!

This course is an imaginative passport. Now more than ever, reading the literature of global voices is an urgent and deeply rewarding project.

Our focus will be on "the Americas." At the moment, I am trying to create a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) module with students in Brazil - and if this succeeds, we'll spend about a month reading work from both Brazil and the US, and communicating with students reading the same material at a Brazilian university. The poetry of Carlos Drummond (Brazil) and Walt Whitman (USA). The work of Conceição Evaristo (Brazil) and Ta-Nehisi Coates (USA).

(Don't worry if you don't speak Portuguese - we'll be communicating, reading and writing in English.) If this plan doesn't work out, we'll still be reading work from Brazil, as well as Chile, Argentina and the Caribbean. All in English translation.
