Description:
This course studies several of Shakespeare’s major tragedies and romances as they reflect the concerns, anxieties, values, and ideologies of Shakespeare's England. We attend to the development of tragedy and romance genres, focusing on social problems such as constructions of gender and class, and the complex identity of the hero as scapegoat. Two papers (5 and 10 pages, respectively, the latter involving guided research), a midterm and a final exam. Class discussion is expected and encouraged.
