Section: 02

Semester: Fall - 2021

Credits: 3

Description:
How to Publish a Book

In this course, we will learn how a book is conceived and made—from manuscript to final publication. Students will learn each step of the publishing process: developing a manuscript, creating a proposal, working with an agent, submitting to an editor, negotiating with a publisher, creating marketing and publicity campaigns, and, finally, submitting the book for review. I will bring in prominent figures in publishing as guest lecturers—an agent, an editor, a publisher, publicity and marketing executives, and a book review editor. Students will be responsible for developing pitch letters, writing editorial comments, and writing promotional and book jacket copy. The class will culminate in a final group project—the final publication of a book.
