Title: THE ENLIGHTENMENT IN EUROPE
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2022
Credits: 3
Description:
Was the Enlightenment all that enlightened? This graduate course for students in the BA/MA and MA Program in English invites students to critically examine the British and European Enlightenment and its legacy in constructing Western values around gender, race, religion, work, and the production of things and knowledge. The reading may include British, French, and German literature about the concept of Enlightenment (Kant, Diderot), a novel (Defoe, Robinson Crusoe), metaphysical proto-science fiction (Margaret Cavendish, Blazing World), a drama (Lessing, Nathan the Wise), a few poems (Pope and Mandeville), and modern opposition to the Enlightenment (Horkheimer, Adorno, and Mbembe). Students will learn how literature intersects with cultural and historical developments during the period, including colonialism, equality/inequality, and tolerance/intolerance.
