Description:
In Modern Poetry to T. S. Eliot, we'll study poems by W. B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, Stevie Smith, Sylvia Townsend Warner, W. H. Auden, and Philip Larkin. Class meetings will involve discussion and close readings of poems. We'll spend two weeks on one of the greatest poems of the twentieth century, Eliot's THE WASTE LAND, devoting time also to looking at early drafts of the poem in Eliot's handwriting. In addition, we'll listen to recordings of the poets reading their work. This is a course for lovers of poetry and those who want to know more about twentieth century poets. Work will involve participation in discussion, a mid-term exam, weekly discussion posts, a final exam and a final paper.
