Description:
This course will explore how political issues have been represented in select periods of American cinema. How have Hollywood films, independent films and documentaries addressed social struggles associated with race, class, gender and sexuality? How have films mediated our understanding of institutions that define justice, democracy, citizenship? Discussion of these topics will be grounded in medium-specific considerations of film style, spectatorship and mode of production.
