Title: SEMINAR IN AMERICAN LITERATURE: YAL AND THE CANON
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2022
Credits: 3
Description:
This semester, we will read a broad representation of novels along with corresponding theoretical essays. We will explore the issues surrounding what adolescents read, the books taught or banned in public schools, the constructs these texts espouse to their intended audiences, and what such works reveal about the socio-cultural contexts within which they were produced. We will discuss these works through multiple lenses; explore portrayals of adolescence as a socio-cultural construct; and examine how Young Adult Literature reflects, responds to or reacts against those paradigms. Consequently, we will examine the elements that have excited a whole generation of new readers. Along with several canonical novels as foundation for this class, some of the contemporary authors we may read include: Benjamin Alire Saenz, Jason Reynolds, M.T. Anderson, Alex London, Amy Sarig King, Lois Lowry, Andrew Smith, Bill Konigsburg, Cynthia Voigt, Neal Shusterman, Paolo Bacigalupi, among others.
