Course objective: To immerse you in the practice of writing critical and analytic essays—and in doing the preparation for such writing, i.e., close reading, taking notes, organizing your ideas, coming up with a topic and a thesis statement, creating an argument, quoting primary and secondary sources, doing the necessary research, and proofreading. You will be getting feedback from me and from your peers as you go through the writing process.
Our thematic topic is the idea of utopias and dystopias in literature. We will be focusing on four main texts (by More, Hawthorne, Gilman, Huxley) but we will also read shorter pieces and texts as well as scholarly essays You will become acquainted with searching various databases on the Sprague Library website (MLA, Ebsco, Project Muse, JSTOR) to get additional research (recent scholarly essays). Approaches to using cultural or historical studies will also be integrated in our meetings.
