Title: LITERATURE OF IMMIGRATION
Section: 03
Semester: Fall - 2022
Credits: 3
Description:
This course examines various literature(s) of immigrants and the migratory experiences of people from diverse backgrounds, including class, race, gender, citizenship, and the intersections of these social identities. Students will learn how the legacies of imperialism and modern projects have influenced immigration to the United States and how immigrants navigate belonging, citizenship, identity, culture, community and language upon arrival and among different generations. This course will focus predominantly on literature in many genres: short story, novel, poetry, essay, while also expanding into other ‘forms’ of literature in which culture is consumed such as music, film, documentary, and media to obtain an interdisciplinary understanding of immigrant experiences in the United States in the late 20th and 21st centuries. Students will explore immigrant narratives from Latino/a, Asian, African and/or Caribbean writers situated within diaspora and decolonial theoretical frameworks.
