Course details
Name: ENGL - 116
Title: WORLD LITERATURE COMING OF AGE
Section: 02
Semester: Spring - 2023
Credits: 3
Description:
Coming-of-age stories mark a loss of innocence and represent the shift from childhood to adulthood. World Literature includes work outside the American and British literary canons; these international texts are generally written abroad and in other languages. In this introductory literature course, we will examine short stories from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin and South America, and the Middle East that feature the coming-of-age theme. Students learn the foundational skills of literary analysis: close analysis/reading, brainstorming, drafting, and editing. This section of World Literature relies on Into the Widening World: International Coming-of-Age Stories by John Loughery (ISBN 978-0892552047/Persea Books). We will also read a short novel, Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha (Penguin, 978-014-1181233).
