Title: MAJOR FILM DIRECTORS

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2023

Credits: 3

Description:
How did Hollywood filmmakers respond to the liberalism of the 1960s and 1970s? Constrained by the box-office demands and artistic conventions of the movie industry, how did filmmakers address issues of race and class, as well as changing attitudes towards sexuality and America’s place in the world as these issues were being debated across the country? This course will examine the work of three directors at the center of what we might call “Hollywood liberalism:” Martin Ritt, Sidney Lumet and Hal Ashby. These directors tackled issues such as urban crises, struggles by workers to unionize, police corruption, gentrification, and the plight of returning Vietnam veterans. Films to be screened include Coming Home, Dog Day Afternoon, Norma Ray, The Front, The Landlord, The Pawnbroker, and Shampoo.
