Course details

Name: ENGL - 240

Title: ENGLISH LITERATURE 1: BEGINNINGS TO 1660

Section: 02

Semester: Spring - 2023

Credits: 3

Description:
An introductory survey of poetry (mostly), prose (some), and drama (just a little) written in the British Isles from the tenth century (more or less) to the end of the seventeenth. Readings will include "Paradise Lost," Book I of Spenser's "Faerie Queene," excerpts from "The Canterbury Tales," Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus," and a wide range of shorter lyric poems. Topics of lecture and discussion will be diverse, but one thematic through-line will be the representation of paradise or utopia: how do the authors we consider imagine the best of all possible worlds? Assignments still TBD, but will probably include: weekly or biweekly reading responses, two essays, and a final test.
