Course details
Name: ENGL - 300
Title: CRITICAL APPROACHES TO ENGLISH
Section: 04
Semester: Spring - 2023
Credits: 3
Description:
An introduction to some of the methods, goals, and pleasures of literary critical reading and writing. Readings will proceed on two tracks. On one, we will make a very brief survey of the history of literary criticism and theory, extending at least as far back as the sixteenth century. On the other, we will read an eclectic range of short texts - poems, short stories, folk tales, children's literature, etc. - that allow us to apply, test, and critique various literary critical approaches. Students will sharpen their analytical skills by means of both a number of short writing assignments AND active, engaged class discussion.
