Description:
In this course, we will chart ways American women writers have inventively played with fictional form and/or addressed complicated, controversial themes in stories and novels. In our analysis we will learn and utilize narrative theory to have a vocabulary for describing fictional techniques and practices, and we will draw on historical and artistic contexts to usefully frame the interventions of these bold and innovative writers. Readings will stretch from the 19th century into recent decades, and we will encounter authors from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to the following list: Hannah Bond, Gertrude Stein, Djuna Barnes, Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich, Sandra Cisneros, Julia Alvarez, Karen Tei Yamashita, Marilynne Robinson, Kathy Acker, Toni Morrison, Otessa Moshfegh, Rachel Kushner, Laila Lalami, Maxine Hong Kingston, Sheila Heti, Maggie Nelson, Cristina Garcia, Jennifer Egan, Helen Dewitt, Jesmyn Ward, and Claire Vaye Watkins. Class presentations and two papers will be required.
