Description:
This course will survey two of the most important national cinemas of the past thirty years: Iranian cinema and Romanian cinema. Iranian cinema is acclaimed for its combination of realism, reflexivity and philosophical inquiry, while Romanian cinema is renowned for its minimalist realism, complex historicization of Communism and rigorous spectatorial ethics. We will study the masterworks of celebrated Iranian and Romanian auteurs such as Abbas Kiarostami, Jafar Panahi and Cristian Mungiu in relation to their national contexts.
