Course details
Name: ENFL - 496
Title: SEMINAR IN FILM
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2023
Credits: 3
Description:
American film has always had an international component and this is particularly true for the period 1920-1945. From the late silent era to the end of World War II, Hollywood was a destination and site of production for film artists who emigrated from various European countries. This semester, ENFL 496 will study the work of many of these artists, primarily directors, who brought to the studios unique styles that expanded the language of American film. Émigré artists, many of whom arrived in Hollywood fleeing fascism, also brought political ideas that profoundly informed American film during the Thirties and Forties. They also formed a community of European intellectuals and artists who met regularly in salons that served as incubator for their political activism. Émigré artists we will study include Joseph Von Sternberg, Fritz Lang, F.W. Murnau, Ernst Lubitsch, Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, Anatole Litvak, Michael Curtiz, among others. Films to be screened include Shanghai Express, Sunrise, Fury, To Be or Not to Be, Confessions of a Nazi Spy, Casablanca.
