Title: INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE: THE SHORT STORY
Section: 04
Semester: Fall - 2023
Credits: 3
Description:
This course focuses on the short story, a versatile form that every region and era makes its own. We’ll look at narrative technique in a gamut of writers from Edgar Allan Poe and Flannery O’Connor to George Saunders and ZZ Packer. To develop critical and rhetorical skills, we’ll be both reading and writing about literature, examining not just what a story means but also how it produces its effects. Students will also complete two brief essays, a midterm, and a final exam. This course meets the women and gender studies (3C) requirement for the English major, as well as the Gen Ed (C2) literature requirement.
