Description:
Course Objective: 1) To introduce you to one of the most fruitful periods of American literature, the American Renaissance, through close attention to three major writers of the period; 2) to help you understand and appreciate how these writers developed an American literature, distinct from British literature, and established American traditions of writing and thinking; 3) to introduce you to current theory in the study of American literature, with an emphasis on race, gender, class, and ecology, areas that reflect current trends in literary criticism; and 4) to investigate how the Romantic notion of the “sublime” was redefined through the lens of these writers’ eyes.
