Course details

Name: ENGL - 525

Title: ENGLISH NOVEL DEFOE TO AUSTEN

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2023

Credits: 3

Description:
This seminar will read the early British novel with a focus on material culture--that is the objects that are represented in these narratives and those that circulate around them. Based on a set of interlocking themes (e.g. gender and race, revolution and abolition, class mobility and sexuality), student analyses in this class will evolve through a study of how we interpret and decode material culture and how the archives can help us reexamine the history of the novel. Class will include a mix of traditional lectures, guest speakers, and time in museums and galleries.
