Name: ENGL - 360

Title: THE IRISH LITERARY REVIVAL

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2023

Credits: 3

Description:
The Irish Literary Revival begins with fairy legends about women healers, magic (or so it seems) disappearances and returns, and arguments between priests and women who claim supernatural powers, all of these actual stories told by people living in rural Ireland in the late 19th century. We will go on to read short works by some of Ireland's greatest writers: poems by Yeats, stories by Joyce, short plays about rebels (Lady Gregory), and a memoir about visiting the Aran Islands (J.M. Synge). At the end of the course, we'll look at the autobiographies of two revolutionary women. Most of the material we study covers the period from the late 19th c. to the early 20thc. Two writers from Ireland will visit our class and give lectures on their special interests. Work will include short posts on Canvas, midterm exams, a final exam, and a final paper. No electronic devices (e.g. computers, iPads, tablets, iPhones, Smartphones) may be used during class.
