Course details

Name: ENGL - 335

Title: CONTEMPORARY IRISH LITERATURE

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2024

Credits: 3

Description:
Students in this course will consider recent Irish fiction, memoir, poetry, and perhaps one film, with a special focus on the dysfunctional Irish family, e.g., Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill's The Fifty Minute Mermaid (in English translation; a narrative about a mermaid who has left the water behind and tried to become "human"),  and Hugo Hamilton's The Speckled People, a memoir of growing up with a fanatical Irish-speaking father who beat his children if they allowed a word of English inside the house, even on a candy wrapper ... and other such stories in poetry and fiction.  At least one of the writers we study will visit our class.  Required work includes regular attendance and participation in discussion; students are urged to offer their own points of view on the somewhat strange texts we study.  Other work includes a mid-term exam, Canvas posts, and a final paper.
