Description:
An analysis of the short story genre, through theoretical approaches based on gender, race, and social class.
We will focus primarily on the American Gothic short story and its history, going back to Washington Irving, and covering such authors as Lydia Maria Child, Poe, Hawthorne, Mary W. Freeman, Charles Chesnutt, Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary Austin, Edith Wharton, William Faulkner, and Shirley Jackson. How did American notions of freedom and the various American natural landscapes help generate a unique short story genre that is Gothic?
Critical analysis papers due throughout the semester, and a research essay will be due by semester's end.
