Name: ENWR - 213
Title: INTRODUCTION TO FICTION WRITING
Section: 03
Semester: Spring - 2024
Credits: 3
Description:
In Introduction to Fiction Writing, we will break down the craft of storytelling into its basic elements: character, setting, plot, and point of view. For each, we will look at successful examples from short stories, novels, and other writings from a variety of authors in a variety of styles. In addition, through several assignments throughout the semester, we will focus on “reading as a writer,” that is, not simply reading to analyze subject matter and theme, but to find out how writers write and what types of tricks they pull out of their bags. Also, as writing is never writing but re-writing, we will focus heavily on revision and reshaping the work that is created this semester. After this semester, you should be able to read and write with more sophistication and focus. You will become familiar with topics ranging from direct and indirect characterization to setting up a scene to creating believable and useful dialogue.
