Description:
The subtitle of this writing intensive course is "Beauty in Words." What makes literature beautiful? What do we mean when we refer to the beauty of a certain phrase or passage in a work of poetry, prose, or drama? How do literary authors represent the experience of beauty? How can we describe and analyze, in our own words, the exciting experience that beautiful literature creates for us as readers? Does literature have to be beautiful? These are some of the questions we will consider as we read a wide range of short poems, short stories, and excerpts from longer works such as plays, novels, and philosophical or theoretical essays on beauty in art.
