Course details
Name: ENGL - 503
Title: GRADUATE WRITING SEMINAR: POETRY - CREATIVE WRITING
Section: 02
Semester: Spring - 2024
Credits: 3
Description:
This is a Creative Writing class focusing on POETRY.
** You do NOT have to be bilingual to take this course. **
The class will be conducted in English, but we will be reading bilingual editions of poetry from across the Americas, paying special attention to poets writing in Spanish and Portuguese. The English translations will always be available.
This "poetry of the Americas" will inspire our own writing projects. Students are free to write poetry in English. (But they are also free to write in Spanish, or in Portuguese, or in a mixture of any of the above.)
We'll be reading poets such as Pablo Neruda and Julia de Burgos and João Cabral de Melo Neto. Together, we'll be writing poems across the semester -- thinking about diction, voice, metaphor and experimentation. Thinking about translation. Thinking about the music of speech.
Poetry is the search for new language. I'm excited to embark on this journey with you.
