Name: ENGL - 110

Title: THE ANALYTIC ESSAY

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2024

Credits: 3

Description:
Our section of ENGL 110 takes up the power that ideas of beauty and ugliness have in the world—not only “our” world as defined by whatever decade or location or community you happen to be born into, but as many worlds as are represented by all the literature ever written anywhere. While no one would argue that there is only one idea of what is beautiful and what is ugly, it seems safe to say that everyone, everywhere, has some idea of the beautiful and the ugly, and that people everywhere have lived and died for and from the power of those ideas. The 19th-century English poet John Keats wrote that “beauty is truth, truth beauty” and “That is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” The “simple” challenge here is: “is it?” Is truth beautiful? Is ugliness also truth? Is "beauty" all we need to know? Does "ugliness" --in behavior as well as in appearance--also require our attention? You get the idea. Our world seems to involve a lot of "ugliness" these days. Can understanding this help us cope with it? Or change it? Your essays will be few and short--the emphasis in this course is on exploring ideas of what we "know," and writing good essays from a variety of perspectives.
